What is Human Design?
Human Design is a synthesis of four ancient wisdom systems — Western astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalah's Tree of Life, and the Hindu-Brahmin chakra system — combined into a single framework by Ra Uru Hu (born Alan Krakower) in 1987. The system uses your exact birth data to calculate a body graph: a nine-centre diagram showing which of your energy centres are consistently defined (coloured) and which are open (white).
The body graph is not a personality test. It doesn't ask how you feel or what you prefer — it calculates a fixed energetic structure based on the position of the planets at the time of your birth. The result is a map of your consistent energy, your innate gifts, and the specific decision-making process that is correct for you.
The core premise of Human Design is that most of us are not living as ourselves. We've been conditioned by family, education, culture, and the energy of the people around us to operate in ways that aren't aligned with our actual design — and that misalignment is the source of most of our chronic frustration, burnout, and sense of not quite fitting.
The five Human Design types
Your Type is the foundation of your Human Design chart — the most important thing to understand first. Each Type has a specific Strategy for engaging with life and a signature feeling that appears when you're operating in alignment.

Generators are the life-force of the planet. They have a defined Sacral centre — a sustainable, renewable energy source that others are designed to work with. The Generator's power comes not from initiating but from responding: when something genuinely lights up the Sacral response (an involuntary 'uh-huh' or 'uh-uh'), the Generator has found the right thing to commit their energy to. When Generators chase what they think they should want rather than what their gut responds to, frustration builds and their energy stalls.

Satisfaction & Peace
Manifesting Generators share the Generator's Sacral definition but have a direct connection between the Sacral and the Throat centre, giving them the capacity to initiate after responding. They tend to be multi-passionate, fast-moving, and non-linear — often skipping steps that seem obvious to others. The key is still to wait for the genuine Sacral response before moving, then inform those who will be impacted. Their greatest mistake is starting things their gut didn't really respond to.
Projector

Success
Projectors are natural guides, advisors, and directors of energy. They don't have consistent access to Sacral energy — they're not designed to work the way Generators work, and trying to do so leads to burnout. Projectors are at their best when they've been specifically invited to offer their wisdom: the job offer, the relationship invitation, the genuine question asking for their perspective. Unasked-for advice, no matter how accurate, rarely lands. When a Projector operates in alignment — seen, invited, and guiding — their impact is disproportionate to their energy output.

Manifestors are the only type truly designed to initiate — to start things, to make things happen without waiting for external cues. Historically, Manifestors were the leaders and visionaries. Their challenge is that their actions affect others in ways that aren't always visible to them, creating a wake of disruption if they move without informing those around them. The practice of informing — not asking permission, just letting people know what's coming — removes the resistance Manifestors typically encounter and allows their initiating energy to flow freely.
Reflector

Reflectors have no consistently defined centres in their body graph — they're entirely open, which means they're exquisitely sensitive to the energy of the people and places around them. Reflectors are the barometers of their communities: how they feel reflects the health of the group they're embedded in. The lunar cycle is their decision-making anchor: before any major decision, a Reflector needs to sit with it across a full 28-day moon cycle, talking to many different people and noticing how their perspective shifts throughout.
Authority: your true decision-making compass
If your Type tells you how to engage with life, your Authority tells you how to make decisions within that engagement. Most people make decisions with their minds — weighing pros and cons, rationalising, thinking their way through choices. Human Design says the mind is not designed to be the decision-maker; it's a tool for communication and processing, not for choosing.
The seven authorities each involve a different part of the body: the Sacral centre (a gut yes/no response for Generators), the Solar Plexus (an emotional wave that must complete before clarity emerges), the Spleen (a quiet, in-the-moment instinct that doesn't repeat itself), the Heart centre (desire and willpower), the G/Self centre (truth that surfaces through speaking), the Throat centre (in Projectors without other authority), and the Lunar cycle (for Reflectors).
Discovering your Authority and actually practising it — making decisions from the body rather than the mind — is what Human Design practitioners call "the experiment." It often takes time to trust, especially for those of us who have spent a lifetime in our heads. But the results of decisions made from authority tend to feel different: more sustainable, more aligned, less second-guessed.
