How to Read Your
Astrocartography Map

Every location on Earth carries a different energetic signature for you, written into the sky the moment you were born. This is how to read that map.

What is astrocartography?

Astrocartography — sometimes called astro-mapping or locational astrology — is the practice of projecting your natal birth chart onto a world map. Developed by the American astrologer Jim Lewis in the 1970s, it operates on a simple but profound premise: the planets weren't in the same position relative to the horizon at every place on Earth when you were born. In New York, Saturn might have been rising on the eastern horizon. In Tokyo at that same moment, it was directly overhead. In Buenos Aires, it was setting in the west.

Each of these positions — rising (Ascendant), setting (Descendant), culminating (Midheaven), and anti-culminating (Imum Coeli) — draws a vertical line across the globe. Those lines are your astrocartography map.

Where you live, work, travel, or even meet someone important can activate different planetary lines. A city that falls on your Venus/AC line might feel like coming home in a way you can't quite explain. A place sitting exactly on your Saturn/MC line may be where your most serious professional ambitions take shape — though with considerable effort attached.

Astrocartography doesn't dictate where you must or must not go. It maps the energetic weather of each place — and understanding that weather lets you choose locations with intention rather than chance.

The four angles: your most powerful lines

Every planet produces four lines on your astrocartography map — one for each of the four angles. These angles are the most sensitive points in any chart, and on the world map they carry the most weight. Learning to read them is where astrocartography becomes genuinely useful.

AC

Ascendant Line

Identity & First Impressions

Where a planet sits on your Ascendant line, that planet's energy colours how you show up in the world — and how the world receives you. On your Sun/AC line you may feel unusually visible, confident, and alive. On your Saturn/AC line, others may perceive you as authoritative and serious, though the pressure to perform can be intense.

DC

Descendant Line

Relationships & Partnership

The Descendant is the mirror of the Ascendant — it governs what you attract and who you draw into your life. Venus/DC locations tend to magnetise meaningful relationships and creative collaborations. Mars/DC can bring dynamic, sometimes friction-filled partnerships that push you to grow.

MC

Midheaven Line

Career & Public Life

The Midheaven is the peak of the chart — your public face, reputation, and professional calling. Jupiter/MC locations are classically associated with career expansion and recognition. Saturn/MC brings discipline and long-game success, often requiring patience before the rewards arrive.

IC

Imum Coeli Line

Home, Roots & Inner Life

The IC is the most private point of the chart — it speaks to where you feel most at home in your bones. Moon/IC locations are often experienced as deeply nurturing and emotionally grounding. Pluto/IC can trigger profound inner transformation but may also surface buried family or ancestral patterns.

What each planetary line means

How to read your map in practice

Start with intention. Before you look at your map, ask yourself what you want from a location. Career growth? Romantic partnership? Creative renewal? Spiritual depth? Different planets and angles serve different intentions. If you want career expansion, prioritise Jupiter/MC and Sun/MC lines. If you're seeking love, Venus/DC and Venus/AC deserve attention.

Use a realistic orb.You don't need to be directly on a line to feel its influence. Most astrocartographers work with an orb of around 700 km (450 miles). Within 200 km is strongly activated; between 200 and 700 km you'll feel it but with less intensity.

Look for paran crossings. Where two lines cross on your map — for example, where your Jupiter/AC line intersects your Venus/MC — you get a paran point. These crossing points create a unique blended energy and are often locations where significant life experiences unfold.

Read the full picture, not just one line. A place may sit on both your Sun/AC (vitality) and Saturn/DC (relationship pressure) lines. That location might be wonderful for your personal confidence and visibility while simultaneously bringing challenging dynamics in partnership. Neither line cancels the other — both are present.

Hold it alongside your full blueprint.Astrocartography is most powerful when read in context with the rest of who you are. Your Human Design type tells you how you're wired to make decisions — and that decision-making process applies to choosing locations too. Your numerology personal year tells you what cycle you're in, which can shift which planetary energy you need most right now.

A note on relocated charts

Your astrocartography map shows which planetary energies are activated by geography. A relocated chart goes one step further — it recalculates your natal chart as if you had been born in a specific city, showing how that location reshapes your entire chart structure. The two tools are complementary: astrocartography for the broad map, relocated chart for the fine detail of a specific place.

What doesn't change when you relocate: your natal planetary placements (the actual positions of the Sun, Moon, planets), your life path number, your Human Design type, your Chinese horoscope animal. Your fundamental blueprint travels with you. What shifts is the angle at which those energies express — think of it as changing the lighting in a room, not the room itself.
